The History of Senior
Independence
What began over 30 years ago as a
demonstration project, has flourished
into a statewide home and community
based care system, which last year touch
over 56,000 lives throughout Ohio.
Ohio
Presbyterian Retirement Services (OPRS)
wanted to create a retirement community
without walls to assist older adults
throughout the greater community. So, in
1980, with a grant from the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation, Breckenridge Village
developed an initial home and community
based service program.
In 1986, Ohio Presbyterian Homes,
becomes Ohio Presbyterian Retirement
Services (OPRS) to incorporate the home
and community services program, and OPRS
reflects this change by adding caring
and quality services to its mission
statement. Because of the success of
Breckenridge’s home and community based
program, OPRS initiates a statewide
strategic growth plan calling for the
development of community outreach
services at each of their retirement
communities.
These community outreach programs
grow in 7 of Ohio’s major metropolitan
areas, prompting a reorganization of
community services. A corporate Vice
President is appointed overseeing and
directing this program in 1999. In the
year 2000, OPRS focuses on the future
growth of community services forming a
corporate community services taskforce
and adopts a statewide brand name of
Senior Independence.
Senior Independence continues to
proudly serve older adults throughout
Ohio who desire to remain independent in
their own homes, apartments and
retirement villages. We are proud that
over 30 years ago our OPRS leaders and
board members had the foresight to
anticipate the growing need for home and
community based care options for older
adults.
